CHAPTER 21

I finished the final sip of my caramel coffee, compliments of Dunkin’ Donuts, as I turned onto my mother’s street. Five fifty-five and people were jogging, bicycling, and walking dogs. Didn’t anyone tell them it was still dark out? Granted, they were wearing reflective clothing and, in some cases, carrying flashlights, but still, dark was dark. At any rate, it was a regular testimonial to the Del Web premise of “active senior community.”

Streetman was at the ready by the front door when I stepped inside the house. His leash was on and he paced everywhere.

My mother bent down, snatched the leash, and thrust it into my hand. “You’d better get going before he changes his mind. He’s apt to run under the couch. That’s why I put on his leash.”

“We won’t be long. I’ll see what Cindy knows about the radio station crew and their contacts.”

“Good. And don’t forget to tell her we’re holding a memorial for Howard and Bucky.”

“Okay.”

Streetman jumped into the passenger seat, circled around once, and curled himself into a ball before closing his eyes. I get it, buddy; six in the morning isn’t my favorite time of day either.

Thankfully, the dog sprang to life the minute I pulled into the parking lot by the dog park. No sooner did I open the driver’s side door when he bounced out of the car and all but pulled me across the lot and into the park. Thank goodness the streetlights were all on.

If I hadn’t known what day it was, the scene in the dog park was a surefire reminder. Most of the dogs were dressed in cutesy pink and red frou-frou skirts or were sporting red bows around their necks. One dog had a sequined pink jacket with jewels that spelled out, “Lover Girl.” Either my mother had forgotten it was Valentine’s Day or she’d spared Streetman the humiliation of dressing him in some ridiculous outfit for the occasion.

Bundles, Cindy’s little white dog, was wearing a pink collar and sniffing around the fence with Cindy only a few feet away. I entered through the gate, unleashed Streetman, who darted for the nearest tree, and waved.

Cindy raced toward me. “Hi, Phee! I was wondering when you’d make it over here. I’ve been expecting you.”

“Really?”

“Hey, it’s been over two weeks with two murders in Sun City West. I knew you’d show up sooner or later. I suppose you’re clamoring to find out what I know about that radio station, and I can tell you, not a whole lot, but enough.”

“What do you mean?”

“Well, I don’t know the ins and outs, but I do know some of the players, so to speak.”

“Um, the ones who are still alive or the dead ones?”

“Both. Bucky was a really nice guy and a good DJ. He used to live on my street but sold his house and bought a condo. Said he got tired of yard work and wanted to spend his time doing the things he enjoyed. I ran across him not too long ago at the supermarket.
